Macavity the Mystery Cat!

In English, we are learning about performance poetry through the exciting text: Macavity.

We have loved looking for adjectives to describe the mystery cat and we have made wanted posters. We have also been language detectives and discussed the meaning of some of the tricky words in the poem.

Today, the children have made freeze frames using what they know about the characters from the poem. They then used their inference skills to decide what the characters might be thinking. They used some fantastic facial expressions to convey emotion!

Rock detectives

We have been rock detectives in team 5 today!

First, we learnt about the 3 different types of rock and how they are made: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

Then, we did some different experiments on rocks and recorded our observations. These observations told us more information about what type of rock each one was.

First, we put limestone, sandstone, slate, marble, granite and chalk in vinegar (acid). We observed whether the rocks fizzed or not. Sedimentary rocks are more likely to fizz because they are made up of little bits of sediment. Metamorphic rocks can sometimes fizz if they started out as sedimentary rocks.

Chalk fizzed the most and this shows us that it is a sedimentary rock. Limestone  and sandstone fizzed a little bit.

Then, we investigated the hardness of the rocks. We made sure it was a fair test by scratching each rock the same number of times with the same material.

What an adventure!

In English this half term, we will be learning to write adventure stories.

For our hook, we put together a puzzle which gave us clues about what type of story we will be looking at. We then had to think about who these people might be, what their relationship is, what their problem could be and how it might be solved.

Miss Marsden then asked us to create a freeze frame as a team to show what might happen in a story involving these characters. She then tapped us on the shoulder and we had to say what we would be thinking as that person.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all of the children, parents and carers in team 5.

I hope you have had an enjoyable Christmas break and are ready to start the new school term!

This half term we will be starting our new learning challenge, ‘Footprints from the Past’, writing adventure stories and learning about rocks in science. In maths we will be learning about calculations, number, fractions and measures.

Our PE days will remain as Monday and Thursday.

Thank you for your continued support.

Christmas week

We have had a fantastic Christmas week in team 5! We have watched a pantomime, had an exciting Christmas party with lots of games and made lots of different Christmas crafts.

Well done team 5!

I hope everyone has a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas break.

See you in 2017!

3D shape model making

Today the children have been working hard to apply their knowledge of 3D shapes.

We used modelling materials (cocktail sticks, straws and plasticine) to build the shapes. We had to have good knowledge of the properties of 3D shapes including the vertices, faces and edges to succeed at the task!

Dogs trust

What an exciting day we have had! This afternoon, we were lucky enough to have a visit from Anna and Mo the dog from Dog’s Trust.

The school council have been raising money for this charity recently so it was good to learn about where our money is going.

Anna told us about how we can be good dog owners as well as how to be safe around dogs.

Thank you Anna and Mo!

Playground hunt

There were some strange objects around the playground today!

We had to follow a set of instructions with clues to find where each object was hidden, take a photograph of the object and write down what we thought it was.

What a strange selection of objects!

Trevon said that his group found a woolly mammoth and Mathew thought that this mean we are learning about the past.

Frankie said that his group found a rubber duck and it might have been left by someone that was having a bath.

Jayden thought that all of the objects were to do with a mammoth having a bath.

Check back later to see what all of this was about!
