Rock detectives

We have been rock detectives in team 5 today!

First, we learnt about the 3 different types of rock and how they are made: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

Then, we did some different experiments on rocks and recorded our observations. These observations told us more information about what type of rock each one was.

First, we put limestone, sandstone, slate, marble, granite and chalk in vinegar (acid). We observed whether the rocks fizzed or not. Sedimentary rocks are more likely to fizz because they are made up of little bits of sediment. Metamorphic rocks can sometimes fizz if they started out as sedimentary rocks.

Chalk fizzed the most and this shows us that it is a sedimentary rock. Limestone  and sandstone fizzed a little bit.

Then, we investigated the hardness of the rocks. We made sure it was a fair test by scratching each rock the same number of times with the same material.

What an adventure!

In English this half term, we will be learning to write adventure stories.

For our hook, we put together a puzzle which gave us clues about what type of story we will be looking at. We then had to think about who these people might be, what their relationship is, what their problem could be and how it might be solved.

Miss Marsden then asked us to create a freeze frame as a team to show what might happen in a story involving these characters. She then tapped us on the shoulder and we had to say what we would be thinking as that person.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all of the children, parents and carers in team 5.

I hope you have had an enjoyable Christmas break and are ready to start the new school term!

This half term we will be starting our new learning challenge, ‘Footprints from the Past’, writing adventure stories and learning about rocks in science. In maths we will be learning about calculations, number, fractions and measures.

Our PE days will remain as Monday and Thursday.

Thank you for your continued support.

Miss Marsden 😊
